Five Marion County 4-H girls competed in the cherry pie-baking contest held in the Vocational Homemaking Department at Marion High School. They were Diana Goertz, Arlene Hett, Glenda Bolte, Donna Janzen, and Margene Savage. Winner of the contest was Donna Janzen. She will represent Marion County in the state contest at Wichita on Jan. 10.

It was a dismal and dreary day Thursday when nine brand new Bell helicopters, on their way to Fort Riley, were forced down at the Marion Airport. Les Powell was driving by the field when the choppers descended and brought three officers into town to call Fort Riley. It was decided they should stay overnight. Other cars were summoned and the men were brought to town and put up for the night at the Elgin Hotel.

JoAnn Stroda invited a group of her friends to her home Dec. 6 to help her celebrate her 12th birthday. Those present were Judy Broadstreet, Karen Keazer, Sandra Kline, Pamela Domke, Barbara Weber, Charlotte Poppe, Donna Hanschu, Connie Warneke, Dona Helmer, Cheryl Schimpf, Shirley Bredemeier, Tina Holmes, Gwen Broz, and Kathy Klein.

Four Marion hunters, with the help of two good coon dogs, caught a 30-pound raccoon along the Cottonwood River several nights ago. This is the largest female coon taken in this area for a long time, it is reported. It was one of several caught that evening, and was by far the largest. The four men were Whitey Kline, Carl Laudner, Del Winter and Andy Mott.
