Marion County Selective Service Board has announced the first call since the recent national emergency has developed. The first men to leave will report at Kansas City Aug. 9 for pre-induction and physical examination.

A major business change will take place Tuesday when the John Deere and Pontiac agencies will be combined under the name of Bernhardt and Utting Motor and Equipment Company and the new company will move to the building now occupied by Nelson Super Service.

LaVern Hoffman, 12-year-old Marion County boy, won second place in the annual Soap Box Derby held last Thursday at Emporia. Hoffman participated in five heats before he was beaten in the final, one length behind the winner. He received a fine Roadmaster bicycle as his award.

Gail Merrill announced Wednesday the apartments being remodeled in his building at Main and Second streets will be finished around Sept. 1, adding another new front to Marion’s Main Street.

The Riddle housing project on the south Marion hill has been slowed recently by the unseasonable rainfall, but foundations are ready to be poured this week and work is expected to move at a fast clip.

Miss Marlys Rupp was honored at a birthday dinner Tuesday evening at the home of her aunt, Miss Edna Rupp. Guests were Ginger Price, Charlene Youk, Karen Brodhead, Janet Holub, and Marilyn Reh. The girls attended the show following dinner.
