W.R. Wolfinbarger, a native of Marion, has been nominated by the president for promotion to the temporary grade of Major General. Known to many friends here simply as “Curley” Wolfinbarger, he is commanding general of the Ninth Air Force with headquarters at Pope AFB, N.C. His military career began here when he volunteered in 1917 for service with the 35th Infantry Division during World War I.

Parents and children will do well to take note of a city ordinance published this week. No bicycles, motor scooters, or other vehicles may be operated on the sidewalks of Marion, and fines will be imposed upon the violators.

Word of the death of Mrs. Walter Reed, 94, will recall to Marion County old-timers several visits here years ago of the late Dr. Reed and his wife to his brother, Tom Reed, of the Antelope neighborhood. Dr. Reed is the nationally famous Army Medical Corps physician for whom the equally famous hospital at Washington, D.C., is named.

Gordon Wingerd, James Propp, and John Newcomer are expected home Saturday from a two weeks trip with the Methodist Travel Camp. They were among 60 boys from the Central Kansas Conference who made the trip to Yellowstone National Park, the Tetons, and will return by way of Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado.
