Marion’s best-known fiction writer, Edwin V. Burkholder, wrote a story in the October issue of Reader’s Digest. It tells the astounding tale of how Charley Faust, a native of Marion, won the National League championship for the New York Giants in 1911 as a pitcher, but without ever pitching a game.

The Marion Junior High football team will be called the “Braves” and is looking forward to the opening of the fall season on Tuesday.

Randolph Carpenter, Marion attorney and Kansas Democratic leader, was recently appointed by President Harry Truman as one of three members of the Motor Carrier Claims Commission.

Two new cases of infantile paralysis have been reported this week. James L. Johnson, 31, son of Braden Johnston of Marion, is in St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Brice Herbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Herbert, Peabody, also is in St. Francis. Hospital authorities are hopeful neither will be too severe.

A number of Marion friends are planning a greeting card shower for Mrs. Emma Shreve Lewis who will celebrate her 93rd birthday on Sept. 29. She is the last remaining member of the four original families who came to Marion Centre.

Lt. Col. Ed Schroeder, with the Inspector General’s Department, United State Army, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Schroeder, other friends, and relatives last week while en route from Washington, D.C., to Fort Sill, Okla.
