The 1951 annual Marion County Hereford Show, held here last Saturday, was the best one yet, in the opinion of most observers and participants. Grand Champion honors were carried off by a new exhibitor this year, Glennon Crowther of Roxbury. Reserve champion bull winner was CK Crusty 52 from H.M. Hauser’s Broken Winecup Ranch. Reserve champion female went to Dolly Mischief 12, belonging to Henry Waner, Florence.

Work on the new American Legion building, mostly volunteer, is progressing steadily. Van’s ladies and children’s ready-to-wear store, and the Marion Electric Shop will soon announce opening dates for their new locations.

Mrs. D.H. Ehrlich had a rather painful experience one evening recently while gathering eggs. Her hand was bitten pretty hard even for a peevish old hen. When it was bitten even harder the second time, she turned on the light and discovered the biter was an opossum carrying four little ones in her pouch.

Nine high school essay winners will compete in a contest Friday to determine who will win the “Operation Goodwill” trip to Canada being sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Those who will compete for the trip through Canada with 25 other Kansas winners are Sarabel Wolf, Claire Hyde, Alice Ward, Carole Schlehuber, Jessie Jewett, Dale Hobein, John Newcomer, Carol Ginavin and Pat Heerey.

Betty L. Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams, has been elected to Mortar Board, national honor organization for senior women at Kansas State College.
