Two popular Marion High School sophomores were killed and five other students injured in a crash Thursday evening on U.S. 77 north of Florence. The two who died instantly were Shirley Ann Mayfield, 16, and Jackie Dean Lais, 15. Those injured were Nancy Allen, 15, Jerry Louis Brose, 15, Shirley Tiemeier, 15, Donald Eugene Kline, 14, and Diana Herbert, 14.

Miss Betty Alice Weber, Ramona, became the bride of Edward George Stenzel in a beautiful double-ring ceremony at Marion’s Christian Church Sunday afternoon, May 13.

Five young citizens made their first appearance at the Marion hospital at various times during the past week. They are Jan Renei Van Buren born Friday to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Van Buren; Kenneth Wayne Hoffman born Saturday to the Clyde Hoffmans; Louise Ann Winter, daughter of Mrs. Jake Winter, born Sunday; Mary Ann Reiswig went home to McPherson Saturday with her mother, Mrs. Herman Reiswig; and Marylin Kay Leppke, who along with her mother, Mrs. Elmer Leppke, was dismissed on Sunday.

The annual award assembly of Marion High School honored many students for outstanding achievements throughout the school year. The good manners award from Funk and Wagnalls Co. with an autographed copy of Emily Post’s “Etiquette,” went to Sarabel Wolf. The Beard Memorial awards for courtesy went to Robert Skibbe and Marjory Collett. Charles Muse was named valedictorian of the class and also received the Balfour scholarship award, the Danforth award, and was named outstanding music student.
