The 10th Infantry Division Band, one of the foremost military musical organizations in the country, will play an open-air concert Sunday afternoon in Central Park. Marion is one of 10 cities in Kansas to be on the band’s spring schedule.

Kathryn Popp was announced as valedictorian of the 1949-59 MHS senior class at the awards ceremony May 17. The Balfour Award went to Max Merrill. Special awards and scholarships went to Tim Burkholder, Darlene Richmond, Verona Vinduska, Nora Zeller, and James Fruechting.

The Marion-Chase County line from Cedar Point north, was visited last Thursday evening by a tornado that upset an empty elevator and caused damage at farms north and along the county line. A heavy rain and hailstorm preceded the tornado.

Marion’s next telephone directory will be issued in book form, and will contain a “Yellow Page” section similar to directories in the largest cities. “Marion has outgrown the card type directory,” says L.R. Simpson, manager for Southwestern Bell.

Effective at once the Marion post office will close at noon on Saturday instead of at 12:30 as in the past few weeks. This announcement, by Postmaster Harold Keazer, is in keeping with instructions from a postal inspector who was here last week.
