The history of the office of Register of Deeds goes back to an act of the legislature in 1861 which created this first of the county offices in order to record the land transactions in early antebellum Kansas. The office in Marion County was started in 1865 and the first deed filed for record was on Oct. 31, 1865.
A bridal shower was given for Miss Shirley Collett May 23 in the Youngtown church basement. Hostesses were Mrs. Lee Bowers, Mrs. John Adams, Mrs. Joe Scharenberg, and Mrs. Orville Scharenberg.
Miss Louise Hadsell, who has been teaching at Lorraine, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Hadsell, for the past week and left Tuesday to attend summer school at Emporia Teachers College.
Alex Case Jr., Jack Beaston, Helen Hett, Dwight Waddell, and Theodore Loney, all of Marion, were among the 1,300 graduates from Emporia State Teachers College last Thursday night.
Jack Highsmith and Herb Winter are coaches of the newly organized Marion Merchants “B” team. Members of the team are Dick Bredemeier, Ernest Ireland, Roger Ireland, Max Merrill, Warren Hayen, Leslie Powell Jr., Kenneth Conyers, Kerns Allen, Don Fruechting, Jim Fruechting, and others.
