Groups of workers will canvass Marion and surrounding area in the near future for the needed $45,000 to complete hospital construction.

The cornerstone for the new St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Marion, will be laid at a formal ceremony this coming Sunday at 3 p.m., according to Father Paul Meier, pastor of the local parish.

An official telegram from the War Department this week informed Mrs. Dixie Herzet of Newton of the confirmation of the death of her son, Jack, in the Korean War. He is the first casualty in the war from this area. The 19-year-old Marion youth was reported “missing in action” on July 22.

Striking new improvements continue to appear along Marion’s Main Street. Mr. and Mrs. Bob DeCatsye have installed attractive new neon signs and a metal awning at Bob’s Grill, adding a bright new touch to the post office block.

Steve’s Barber Shop is open on Tuesday evening until 9:30. Shoeshine boys are in the shop after school Tuesday night and all day Saturday.

Lyndon Hett attended a birthday party at the Menno Harder home at Hillsboro Saturday. The party was in honor of “Butch” Harder’s fifth birthday.

Mrs. Ruben Winter was honored at a stork shower Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Hurshel Raleigh. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Keith Kelsey and Mrs. Ralph Mathew. The gift table was centered with a miniature stork.
