A concerted effort is being made this week by businessmen and city officials of Marion, Florence, and other Cottonwood-Neosho cities to bring the need for immediate action in the matter of flood control to the attention of Congress.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winter, Lincolnville, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of his daughter, Sylvia, to Jack Helmer. The wedding date has been set for March 13.

A casual visitor to Marion, making a tour of the streets, is amazed at the building and repair projects that are underway. From major construction to minor remodeling, the community is a virtual beehive of activity.

Gooding Shoe Repair opened for business this week in the building formerly occupied by Schlotz Radio Shop. Pearl Gooding, formerly in the shoe repair business at Enterprise, is owner and manager of the shop.

Winners of the essay contest sponsored by the Marion Kiwanis Club on “Benefits of the hospital to the community” were announced this week. The five winners were Kay Navrat, first, Ralph Zeller, second, Margie Bernhardt, third, Margaret Sinclair, fourth, and Howard Williams, fifth.

Mr. and Mrs. Desmond Watt and twin babies will be honored Wednesday afternoon at an informal “at home” party at the home of her parents, the John Wheelers.
