Central Park is being watered this week by installing a pump to take water directly from Luta Creek. It is below the city intake and will not affect the city’s water supply. This is being done to maintain the park grass and trees, especially in preparation for the large crowd expected for Old Settlers’ Day.

Virginia (Jenny) Hazeltine Corby, loved Marion teacher, died Sept. 27 after an extended illness. She taught continuously in Marion from 1898 to 1939. The piano belonging to Miss Corby was left to Bown-Corby School, according to school authorities, and was moved there today, Thursday.

Through the combined efforts of the J.C. Penney Company and the Kaw Theatre, a style show will be held Oct. 5 between the first and second feature picture showings. The style show will be enacted by six high school girls, presenting fall fashions, plus several small children models.

The American Legion will again this year sponsor a beginners’ class in square dance staring Oct. 7 at the Legion hall. It also was announced an intermediate class will start probably within a couple of weeks.

Among the old timers that will be in Marion next Thursday is C.F. “Charlie” Brooker. One of the grand old settlers Marion is glad and proud to honor, “Charlie” is active and interesting despite his nearly 100 years. He will pass the century mark Dec. 23.
