Janet Faye Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winter of near Lincolnville, was the first baby born in 1956 at St. Luke Hospital. She was born at 9:13 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces.
It was almost like old home week in the early hours at the courthouse Tuesday morning when yearly seekers of a low license tag number gathered in the corridor to wait for the county treasurer’s office to open. Virgil Allen, Route 4, Marion, was the first to arrive and received tag No. 1.
Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Pierce invited members of the Lakeside Square Dance Club to their home Saturday evening for a New Year’s Eve party and dance. The party was held in the large basement recreation room at the Pierce home.
Even though Marion had to be content with sixth place in the invitational Jayhawk League basketball tournament in Wamego over the holidays, Marion senior Larry Schlehuber was the outstanding player of the tournament as he set six individual tournament records.
Only one person, Mrs. Hugh Gardner of Marion, was present to claim the fourth place prize of $5 in this week’s Cash Day drawing. First place prize at next Wednesday’s drawing will be $140.
