Total school enrollment on opening day, Tuesday, stood at 562 students, including kindergarten, and there are several more expected to enroll within the next few days.

Passers-by at the Hett place, 10 miles southwest of Marion, are craning their necks to get a look at the huge stack of hay that towers over the landscape. It’s reinforced and tied together with board slats and wire to prevent sagging. The stack belongs to Jim and John D. Hett and a rough estimate reveals that it contains more than 2,500 bales.

Jon Schimpf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Schimpf, was the happy winner of the new bicycle given away by Jackson’s on opening day of school.

A special program has been arranged by Marion Kiwanis Club meeting for Oct. 14 when Dr. Willard Bellinger, director of the dental hygiene division of the Kansas State Board of Health will present a strong case for fluoridation.

Babies born at St. Luke Hospital during the past week include Debbie Lucile, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Edmunds born Sept 2; Morris Adrian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tyner of Peabody, Sept. 3; and Leona Louise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Richmond, also born Sept. 3.

The annual CVL football forecast shows good signs for the Warriors this year. Fourteen returning MHS players include Jim Christensen, Junior Bledsoe, Jerry Kline, Junior Post, Larry Dieter, Neal Hoopes, Mickey Summervill, Wayne Thies, Gene Waner, Tom Shirley, and Marion Kelsey.
