John E. Wheeler, well known Marion attorney and storyteller extraordinary, will be the principal speaker on the Old Settlers Day program Sept. 27.

Mass inoculation of Salk polio vaccine for Marion countians in the 19-40 age group will be offered at special clinics set up over the county within the next week or two.

Larry Glover was high point reader in the summer contest at Marion City Library for young readers. He read 58 of the approved list of books. Tied for second were John Hoover and Ruby Ann Winkley with 38. Mary Stephens was third with 21 and fourth was Belita Winchester with 13.

The first day of school was Sept. 2 for the newly consolidated joint rural high school district formed to serve high school students of Pilsen, Ramona, Lincolnville, Lost Springs and Burdick communities.

Newest addition to the Marion High School band is the “Indian Glamour” brought in to inspire the “Warriors,” please the crowd, and add color to their performances. Uniforms are new and Bill Caselman has offered this Arabian horse “Matai” for band parades and public performances. Pictured in the new uniforms are “Chief” Caselman and Maitai, drum majorettes Patsy Slusser and Pat Longhofer, and twirlers Beverly Pankratz, Lucinda Hauser, Tressie Miles, and Donna Jost.
