The merchants of Marion are again sponsoring a “first baby” contest, details of which will be announced in next week’s RECORD. The winner will be the first baby born in St. Luke Hospital after the first of the year.

Thies Food Center, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Thies, has been sold to new owners who will take over Jan. 2. New owners of the popular market on the hill at East Main and Cedar Sts. are Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Wilson of Moran.

Miss Betty Bichet, valedictorian of the 1957 graduating class of Florence High School, has been awarded a $300 scholarship at Emporia State Teachers College. Miss Bichet plans to be an elementary school teacher following college graduation.

Congratulations to the following new parents: Mr. and Mrs. Gary Carlson who welcomed a son Gregory Dean Dec. 19; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Costello who are the parents of a daughter Theresa Marie born Dec. 20; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Conyers whose son Jerry Dee was born Dec. 20; and Mr. and Mrs. Max Blanding, whose son David Max was born Dec. 22.

The engagement of Audrey Ann Davies to Edmond Neal Slocombe is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Davies, Marion. Mr. Slocombe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Slocombe, Peabody. Both are students at Kansas State College, Manhattan. A summer wedding is planned.
