The case of the State of Kansas vs. William E. Gayer will go to trial October 25 in the District Court of Marion County. Selection of a jury will begin Monday and will likely take three days.

The first actual peacetime draft call went out from the Marion County draft board last week. Five young men will leave Marion by bus for Manhattan this afternoon for physical examination and subsequent induction into the armed forces. If accepted they will be inducted for a 21-month training program.

Miss Viola Thompson presented her piano pupils in a recital at the Methodist church Monday night. Those participating included Ernestine Good, Janice Meisner, Kathryn Popp, Mary Hannaford, Juanita Ford, Carole and Larry Schlehuber, Shirley and Archie Stenzel, Mollie and Michael Brodhead, Karen and Sheryl Becker, Carol and Rita Miser, Margaret Ann McClain, Carmen Siebert, Mayme Swehla, Dwight Kruse, Carol Weyand, Peggy Hayward, and Bonnie Harder.

Mrs. Leo Brose entertained at dinner Tuesday evening in celebration of her son, Jerry’s 13th birthday. Guests were Herbert Bartel, Michael Brodhead, Donnie Seibel, Harold Byram, Johnny Summervill and Harold Shields. They enjoyed a line party to the Kaw Theatre following the dinner.

George Warkentin of the Canada community had the misfortune to get his hand caught in a corn picker this week. He was in the hospital for a few days but is home now.

The past week has seen the farmers combining the fine sorghums, bringing cattle home for pastures and other jobs preparatory for the winter months ahead.
