In a series of rapid moves, the KBI and Sheriff Lloyd Davies took into custody William E. Gayer, 29-year-old Emporia truck driver, and charged him with the murder of Herbert J. Kindred. The accused man tells a strange story of an offer of $1,000 by Kindred for him to fire fatal shots.

Judge Joseph T. Dickerson will be the principal speaker at the afternoon program held in the park Sept. 16 as one of the main events of the annual Old Settlers Picnic. Joe Dickerson came to Marion in 1870 and lived on a homestead four miles south of town.

Eight baseball teams from this area have entered the local invitational hardball tournament starting Sept. 2 at Marion Athletic Field. Teams entered are Hillsboro, Hesston, Peabody, Cottonwood, Latimer, White City, Council Grove, and Marion.

Joyce Keazer was hostess at a slumber party at her home last Thursday evening. The group enjoyed a bicycle hike and swim Friday morning with breakfast at the lake. Guests were Patsy Hett, Donna Clair Miesse, Iva June Avery, Loretta Conyers, Patricia Platt, and Delores Razor.

Carpenters, painters, electricians, plumbers are busy swarming over the first floor of the Masonic building remodeling and installing fixtures in preparation for a big planned re-opening of the Kroger store on September 2. Manager Cleo O’Donnell and meat manger Ira Turner with other members of the force are taking vacations while the work is being done.
