'Battle Baseball' ends at state

Battle Baseball, a Hillsboro-based team of players age 12 and younger, ends its season this month by placing third in the consolation bracket at a state tournament in Pratt.

The team had entered the National Baseball Congress / Hap Dumont tournament seeded ninth out of 33 but did not make the 24-team championship bracket.

From early April until concluding competition this month, Battle Baseball competed in eight tournaments, posting a 17-14 season record in games against 26 different teams.

While a majority of the team’s 11 players were from the Hillsboro area, others came from Marion, Chase County, Herington, Council Grove, and Lawrence.

Nearly 40 fans followed the team throughout this season.

The team’s name, Battle Baseball, is taken from Psalms 18:39: “You armed me with strength for battle.”
