'Lapse of judgment' results in officer's resignation

After only a couple of months as part of the Marion Police Department, Sarah Alam has resigned from the department.

“Her resignation followed the investigation of an off-duty incident,” City Administrator Doug Kjellin wrote in a statement Friday. “Ms. Alam was determined to have committed no crimes, but the incident was a lapse of judgment which, when inevitably magnified by rumor, would have adversely affected Ms. Alam’s effectiveness in our town for some time.”

The city did not go into any more specifics about what the incident was.

Alam said she agreed that talk around town would have made it too hard to be a productive police officer in Marion.

“I placed myself into a bad position with pure innocent intentions, and it backfired,” she said.

Alam said she plans to continue a career in law enforcement, wiser for her experience in Marion.

“I loved working for the City of Marion and loved the town as a whole,” Alam said. “I had a great administration. The chief and assistant chief were amazing people personally and professionally.”

Kjellin wrote that the police department and city wish Alam well. Alam joined the Marion Police Department on March 5.
