To honor someone is to decide they are valuable, then act accordingly. Sometimes that is a decision based on personal feelings.
Other times, however, it is a response to a pre-established fact. For instance, God has told us that we are to honor our parents. God has already decided that parents — especially godly parents — are a great and necessary value to any culture. Therefore, we honor our parents because of the importance God has already placed upon them.
It is a two-sided relationship because parents are also made aware of the value God places on children. Husbands and wives are called to appreciate one another. The Bible also tells us to honor widows by seeing that they are provided for.
This month has been dubbed “Pastor Appreciation Month.” I’m not sure where the idea came from, but the thought is kind. Most pastors lead because they feel called to do so. And because they recognize the incredible value God has placed on the church. The book of Acts refers to “the church … which He [God] purchased with His own blood.” (Acts 20:28).
It is an honor to be entrusted with the care of something so important to God. Pastors appreciate the people they serve alongside. There is nothing like the church. Apparently God thinks so too. Do you?
