140th Road near Limestone

A calf was struck and killed on 140th Road near Limestone at 6:20 a.m. June 23, when Marlin Jay Wiebe, 24, 3283 Bison Road, Durham, was driving a 1996 International truck and couldn’t avoid it. The truck was registered to Ag Service Inc., 1830 Kanza Road, Hillsboro.

U.S. 56 near Orchard Drive, Hillsboro

Ashley Ann Garth, 17, 515 Locust St., Marion, stuck the rear of a 2001 Pontiac GrandAm at 12:01 a.m. June 26 on U.S. 56 near Orchard Drive, Hillsboro, while driving a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle. The driver of the Pontiac, Devin Lee Abernathy, 18, McPherson, had slowed because a vehicle was turning in front of him. Garth told law enforcement that she may have fallen asleep. The Volkswagen was registered to Todd Alan Heitschmidt, of the same address as the driver.

U.S. 56/77 near 270th Road

Timothy A.Z. Hemphill, 22, Brighton, Ill., was northbound on U.S. 56/77 near 270th Road at 2:35 a.m. June 26 in a 2002 Ford Taurus, when he fell asleep, causing his vehicle to leave the road and sideswipe a metal guardrail. He said he awoke, overcorrected his steering, crossing left of center, and hit a concrete guardrail. The car came to rest in the northbound lane. The driver was not injured.

U.S. 56 near Limestone

A deer was struck and killed at 9:55 p.m. June 26 by a 1998 Honda Accord driven by Karah Layne Covey, 27, Valley Center, on U.S. 56 near Limestone Road.
