ACCIDENTS
REPORTED
These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:
SHERIFF
US-56/77/K-150 roundabout
Haddan A. Fields, 20, Fort Campbell, Tennessee, totaled his 2021 Hyundai Elantra when he fell asleep at 1:48 a.m. March 31 and drove it through the Marion roundabout.
The car ran off the road to the left, struck curbing and signs, and overturned. It sustained damage to the entire vehicle and was listed as destroyed.
Deputy Jesse Raney’s report, released Friday, states that Fields was injured but not taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Monitored transmissions indicate he suffered a bloody nose and declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
Marion firefighters also responded and directed traffic until a wrecker could remove Fields’ car, which according to Raney’s report was not insured.
90th Rd. north of Diamond Rd.
Rosemary K. Reimer, 69, rural Goessel, hit a deer at 9:33 p.m. Thursday with her 2016 Toyota Prius.
The car remained drivable with damage to its right front.
US-56 west of Chisholm Trail Rd.
Dylan J. Riley, 21, Goessel, hit a deer at 4:48 a.m. Friday with his 2015 Ford Explorer.
The sport-utility vehicle remained drivable with damage to its front and hood.
MARION
Cedar St. north of Kellison St.
Sheriff’s deputy Clayton J. Philpott, 26, Peabody, reported nearly nine hours later that he had hit a deer at 1:54 a.m. March 31 with his 2015 Ford F-150 police vehicle.
Philpott told interim Police Chief Zach Hudlin that he had been responding with lights and siren to a different wreck, presumably one at the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout.
He estimated his speed at 40 to 45 mph. Speed limit on the street is 30 mph.
The truck remained drivable with damage to its hood and left front.
No tickets were listed as being issued.
3rd St. south of Santa Fe St.
A 2020 Volvo semi-trailer truck backed into an illegally parked 2024 Honda Odyssey at 11:50 p.m. March 31, according to a report by interim Police Chief Zach Hudlin.
The semi, owned by Shaw Transport of Dalton, Georgia, and driven by Adam R. Zarda, 45, Kansas City, Kansas, had been attempting to turn into an alley to make a delivery to County Seat Decorating Center, a block to the south.
While backing up to correct its approach, it struck the Honda, owned by Joyce A. Barkman of Hillsboro.
Unaware that 3rd St. no longer was one-way, she had driven in from the south and illegally parked in an apparently legal parking space on the left rather than right side of the street, according to Hudlin’s report.
The semi sustained damage characterized as minor to the right rear of its trailer. The Honda sustained more serious damage to its left side but remained drivable.
No tickets were listed as being issued.
Elm St. north of Lawrence St.
While attempting to park at 9:20 a.m. April 2, Phillip L. Baldwin, 75, Florence, backed his 2008 Chevrolet Silverado into an already legally parked 2007 Isuzu 270.
Baldwin’s pickup sustained damage characterized as minor to its rear. The Isuzu, owned by Gary L. Cheever of Topeka, sustained more extensive damage to its front but remained drivable.
Cheever was sitting in his truck at the time.
Officer Kaylan Miles blamed the accident on improper backing, but no tickets were listed as being issued.
