Accidents reported

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Washington Street and C Street, Hillsboro:

Celia S. Gross, 74, 203 E. A, Hillsboro, was southbound on Washington Street near C Street in a 2005 Buick Century at 4:23 p.m. Sept. 23, when her vehicle was struck by a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville, driven by Anthony C. Monson, 25, 205 S. Washington, Hillsboro. Monson’s vehicle was parked on the west side of Washington Street, and he said his view of the road was blocked by a parked vehicle and did not see the Buick. The Pontiac was registered to Monica J. Monson of White Bear Lake, Minn. Hillsboro Police Officer David Funk reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Quail Creek Road near 330th Road:

Valorie J. Madron, 42, 220 Chicago, Lost Springs, was northbound on Quail Creek Road near 330th in a 2001 Ford Escape at 11:20 a.m. Sept. 26, when the steering wheel started shaking, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered an east ditch, crossed a roadway, and then entered a west ditch. The driver was transported by Tampa EMS to Herington Municipal Hospital with possible injuries, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Jim Philpott.

190th Road near Limestone Road:

John D. Whitwell, 22, 1576 190th, Marion, was eastbound on 190th Road near Limestone in a 2008 Ford F-150 pickup at 10:30 p.m. Sept. 26, when the driver swerved to miss a deer on the roadway, which caused the vehicle to enter a ditch and hit a power pole. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Travis Wilson reported the driver was not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages.

Intersection of Bison Road and 220th Road:

Donovan L. Schmidt, 57, 222 N. Madison, Hillsboro, was eastbound on 220th Road in a 2003 Toyota pickup at 1:40 p.m. Sept. 27. Ryan L. Hamm, 22, Canton, was northbound on Bison in a 1996 Buick Century. Schmidt stated that he did not see the Buick because of a high ditch and the two vehicles collided in the intersection. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages, reported Deputy Philpott.

Third Street near Birch Street, Hillsboro:

Linda Bartel, 87, 506 W. Grand, Apt. 2D, Hillsboro, was backing from a parking space on the north side of Third Street near Birch, Hillsboro, in a 1990 Buick Century at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 27, and struck the side of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, owned by Christopher Mook, 37, Newton, that was parked on the south side of Third Street. Frieda Birkle, 86, 506 W. Grand, Apt. 6A, Hillsboro, was a passenger in the Buick. Officer Funk reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

140th Road near Indigo Road:

Hollie E. Cummings, 23, 851 140th, Hillsboro, was westbound on 140th Road near Indigo in a 2005 Dodge Neon at 12:45 a.m. Sept. 30, when a deer came a south ditch and onto the roadway. The driver swerved to miss the deer, entered the north ditch, and drove through a barbed wire fence. The driver was not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Matt Vogt.

Intersection of U.S.-77/56/K-150:

John T. Tooley, 54, Independence, Mo., was westbound on K-150 in a 2009 International truck at 4:19 p.m. Sept. 30, when he attempted to cross the intersection, westbound on U.S.-56 and did not see a northbound 2005 International semi, driven by Mark L. Doperalski, 52, Wamego. The semi driver applied his brakes but struck the side of the smaller truck. The International truck was registered to Idealease of MO-KS, Inc., of Kansas City, Mo. The semi was registered to FL Transportation Inc., of Plano, Texas. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Duane McCarty reported both drivers were injured but Doperalski was the only one transported by Marion EMS to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

60th Road near Limestone Road:

Danny W. Deeds, 43, 204 N. Sycamore, Peabody, was eastbound on 60th Road near Limestone in a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup at 2 p.m. Oct. 2, when he stated that his truck started to pull to the right. When he tried to get back on the road, the vehicle went through a north ditch and a barbed wire fence. The driver had possible injuries, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Larry Starkey, and more than $1,000 in damages.

U.S.-56 near Alamo Road:

Paul E. Sanford Jr. was westbound on U.S.-56 in a 2004 Acura passenger car at 8:57 p.m. Oct. 2, when he heard a popping noise and noticed flames under the hood. The driver stopped his vehicle at the intersection of Alamo Road and U.S.-56, and tried to extinguish the fire. Deputy Philpott reported the driver was not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages.

Kanza Road near 220th Road:

Troy B. Hett, 34, 2792 Mustang, Tampa, was southbound on Kanza Road near 220th in a 1993 Ford F-250 pickup at 7:29 p.m. Oct. 3, when two deer came from a west ditch and onto the roadway. The front of the truck struck one deer and the front of the trailer struck a second deer, reported Deputy Vogt. Passengers in the truck were Bernice Mains, 41, Jace Hett, 9, and Tristen Hett, 11, all of the same address. The passengers in the vehicle were not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages.

290th Road near Nighthawk Road:

Rex A. Vandegrift, 46, Gypsum, was eastbound on 290th Road near Nighthawk, traveling at a high rate of speed on a 2003 Honda motorcycle at 9:45 p.m. Oct. 4, when he struck a westbound 1984 Ford LTD driven by Jerry W. Engler, 61, 1469 260th, Marion, who was attempting to make a left turn onto Nighthawk. The motorcycle struck the rear of the car, ejecting the motorcyclist from the motorcycle. Vandegrift died at the scene. Belinda Engler, 59, of the same address, was a passenger in the car. Neither passengers in the car were injured, reported Deputy Vogt. The motorcycle was registered to Ron Chapel of Assaria.

Indigo Road near 120th Road:

Tammy L. Smith, 46, Newton, was southbound on Indigo Road near 120th in a 2005 Chevrolet passenger car at 10 p.m. Oct. 4, when a deer came from a west ditch and was struck. Deputy McCarty reported the driver was not injured and there was more than $1,000 in damages.

Intersection of U.S.-56/77/K-150:

Sandra K. Schmitt, 46, Hutchinson, was eastbound on U.S-56 and had stopped at the stop sign in a 2003 GMC Yukon at 11 a.m. Oct. 5, and was attempting to turn north on U.S.-56/77. She stated to Deputy McCarty that she pulled out in front of a northbound 2003 Toyota Corolla, driven by Adrienne L. Struble, 19, Lawrence, because she through it was a four-way stop. The Toyota was registered to Philip W. Struble of the same address. There were three passengers in the GMC, Miranda Eugelken, 27, Leslie Hoffman, 44, and Amanda Smith, 28, all of Hutchinson. Michaela Taylor, 19, of Manhattan, was a passenger in the Toyota. Struble and Taylor were transported by Marion EMS to St. Luke Hospital with possible injuries.
