Andrew Donovan Shields

Services for Andrew Donovan Shields, 23, who died Thursday after suffering a stroke, will be at 10 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 S. Ridgeview Rd., Olathe.

Born Aug. 29, 1985, in Overland Park, he graduated in 2003 from Olathe North High School, where he was active in soccer, tennis, and baseball. He participated in marching band and was an Eagle Scout.

He worked at Texas Roadhouse in Liberty, Mo., while completing requirements for a degree in international business from William Jewel College.

At the time of his death, he had just accepted a promotion and was looking forward to moving to Stillwater, Okla.

A member of the percussion section of his college band, he was starting goalie on William Jewel’s 2006 NAIA final four soccer team and was named to the all-tournament team.

An alumnus of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, he studied abroad in Freiburg, Germany, and learned several languages, including German, French, Italian and Russian.

Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his father, Casey K. Shields, formerly of Marion, and grandfathers Harold Shields of Marion and Roland Dalrymple.

He is survived by his mother, Linda Schoonover; brother, Brian Shields; stepfather, Richard Schoonover; and stepbrothers Andrew, Ryan, Matt and Brad Schoonover, all of Olathe, and by grandmothers Ilse Shields of Marion and Ann Dalrymple.

The family has suggested memorials to the American Stroke Association or to a fund to be established.

At his request, Mr. Shields served as an organ donor.
