Several Marion County athletes were among the top finishers when more than 3,000 athletes competed in six classes last week at the state track meet in Wichita.

Hillsboro

Zachary Denholm led the Hillsboro boys with a third-place finish in the 110 hurdles. Addison Jost led the girls with a fourth-place finish in the 800 run.

Jost’s cousin Moriah finished 13th in the 800 run. D’Myia Cox won seventh in both the long jump and triple jump. Abbigail Williams placed seventh in shot put.

Angel Rivera won seventh in discus, and Anders Weisbeck placed ninth in discus.

The Jost cousins, along with Jaidyn Frantz and Nora Hein, placed 12th in the 4x800 run.

“As a father of a senior track athlete and the head track coach, I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication that our team has put in this season,” coach Demetrius Cox, D’Myia’s father, said. “The state meet was a culmination of months of training, tough practices, and countless hours of preparation.

“Watching my daughter and her teammates compete at the highest level was a truly unforgettable experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their journey and to have witnessed their growth both as athletes and as individuals.”

Marion

This was Chance Shults’s third year at the state meet, and he tied for fourth place in the pole vault with 12 feet.

“He handled the nerves and the competition very well,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “When he cleared the first two heights, we knew he was in a good place and would score well.

“He has been our top scorer all year, and it was fun to see him end his career with a state medal.”

Tristen Dye, Christopher Beery, Luke Wessel, and Eli Klenda finished 10th place in the 4x800 relay.

“We are so pleased to have Dye and Beery running at the state meet at the end of their senior year,” Thierolf said. “Both of these runners has earned everything they have gotten, and it was great to see them get rewarded for their hard work.

“It was also good for Wessel and Klenda get a taste of the state meet and to get them accustomed to the event and for them to see what great runners Kansas has.”

Goessel

Goessel boys scored points in four events. Jake Wiens landed in the sand a whole foot farther in the long jump than he had all season. His leap of 20 feet 11.75 inches earned him a fourth-place medal and scored five points for the team.

Eli Boden also achieved his personal best for the season in triple jump. He captured fifth place with a jump of 42 feet 6.5 inches and earned four points for the team.

Grant Bryant took seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.16 seconds, earning two points for the team. The 4x100 relay circled the track in 44.35 seconds to earn third-place medals and six points for the team.

The team, all seniors, consisted of Grant Bryant, Jake Wiens, Joey Lapp and Kacen Smith.

“This was a good way to end it,” Smith said of their track careers at Goessel

Goessel boys accumulated 17 points and landed in 11th place

The Goessel girls earned points in the 4x100 relay. The team of Aimee and Abbigail Funk, Cheyenne Sawyer, and Brooklyn Wuest ran their lap in 51.91 seconds. They finished fifth, earning four points.

Centre

Only one athlete represented Centre at the state meet.

Kaitlynn Bina placed 13th in the 800-meter run and placed 12th in the 1600 run.

“Even though I didn’t get the times or places I was looking for at Cessna, I had an amazing season overall and I’m planning to put in a great deal of work to make it even farther next year,” Bina said.

It’s always good to finish the season with your fastest races, coach Alan Stahlecker said.

“She competed all the way to the end, passing two runners in the final straightaway to move up two spots in the 800, her final race,” Stahlecker said.
