Beckham to solo with professional band

Former Marion County Park and Lake resident, Dwight Beckham Sr., will be featured as a trumpet soloist with the Wichita Wind Ensemble Professional Concert Band at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Wichita Forum, 147 S. Hillside Ave.

The theme of the concert is “An Expression of Life at the Carnival.” Beckham will be featured in the band’s performance of “Carnival of Venice,” by Herbert I. Clarke.

The 50-piece concert band, under the direction of John Taylor and Bryan Kirk, is in its fifth season.

The 81-year-old musician began his professional career at age 17 when he won a position in the trumpet section of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 25 years.

He has held principal positions in many orchestras. He served on the faculties of Bethel College and Wichita University and was band director at Valley Center and Newton school districts.

Beckham is in the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame and the Kansas Music Educators’ Association Hall of Fame. He has composed several compositions for orchestra and concert band and has received a Kansas Arts Commission Fellowship in Music Composition.

Beckham and his wife, Helen, live in Hesston.
