The Centre High School boys’ basketball team finished the 2012 season Monday with a 72-50 loss to Goessel in the first round of the 1A substate tournament at Goessel.
The Bluebirds got off to a 7-0 start making two layups and a 3-pointer.
Justin Deines made a layup and a free throw to put Centre on the board. Another layup by Deines produced the only other points scored by the Cougars in the first quarter. Goessel led, 12-5.
Centre continued to struggle to score in the second quarter. Trevor Hageberg, Ty Simons, and Kordell Harding each scored two points. However, Goessel added 17 points to lead at halftime, 29-11.
The Cougars trailed by 22 points at the end of the third quarter and finished the game with a 22-point deficit.
Deines scored 8 points in the third quarter, Simons scored 6, and James Wyatt and Kyle Methvin, scored 2 points each. Goessel scored 21 points to lead, 51-29.
Centre’s 21 points in the fourth quarter almost matched Goessel’s 22 points. However, the Cougars trailed by as much as 29 points, 70-41, at one point. In the final minutes of the game, a 3-pointer by Cory Brunzell, two free throws by Harding, and a layup by Chad Mueller, plus a layup by Goessel, resulted in a final score of 73-50.
Deines led Centre’s scoring with 15 points. Simons scored 11.
The Cougars ended the season with a record of 9-12.
