Both MHS teams split on diamond

The Marion High School softball team split two games with Bennington Tuesday at Bennington.

The Warriors lost the first game, 15-13. Bennington recorded nine hits on pitcher Raelene Allen.

Marion did put together some offense in the first game. Megan Richmond went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Allen went 2-for-2, racking up three RBIs on a triple and single.

The Warriors won the second game 9-7 on the strength of a strong pitching performance from Richmond. The freshman hurler collected five strikeouts and put together two 1-2-3 innings in the game.

She closed the door on Bennington up 9-7 with a four-pitch inning, forcing a pop fly, and groundouts to Shelby and Montana Percell at the corner infield spots.

Hudson was impressed with the Marion defense in the second game.

“I’m just excited that we’re getting routine plays,” Hudson said. “That’s what had been killing us.”

Shelby Percell also had a nice game at the plate with two triples, good for three RBIs. Allen went 3-for-4 with a triple. Annie Whitaker also hit a triple and recorded two RBIs.

The second game was a complete reversal for the Warriors. The team committed one error in the game.

Benefiting from strong defense was first-time freshman starter Grif Case. Case pitched a complete game, seven innings with four strikeouts, allowing four walks and six hits. Coach Roger Schroeder commended Case and Sprowls for working together.

The Warriors had opportunistic hitting in the second game, using four hits to score three runs.
