The Centre High School boys’ basketball team advanced to the second round of the Eisenhower League tournament at Wakefield after defeating Elyria Monday, 59-37.

In a 15-all first quarter, Brian Burhoop and Ben Krause each made a three-pointer, and James Weber and Konley Harding scored field goals.

Trevor Troutt came alive in the second quarter to score four field goals. Harding added four points on a field goal and two free-throws, and Tanner Brunner made two free throws, resulting in a 29-23 halftime lead for the Cougars.

Weber made most of Centre’s points in the third quarter, making five field goals and one free throw. A fourth quarter which included seven successful free-throw attempts by five players contributed to the 22-point victory.

The Cougars were 20-of-46 in field goals, 2-of-6 from three-point range, and 13-of-28 from the free-throw line.

Weber was Centre’s leading scorer with 15 points. Troutt led on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Eisenhower League basketball tournament began this week at Wakefield. Centre boys were seeded fourth with an overall record of 3-5, and Centre girls were seeded second with a record of 4-4.

Hope and Solomon boys top the league with identical records of 4-4. Solomon is seeded first in the tournament, and Hope is second. Wakefield, 3-4, is third, Elyria, 3-6, fifth, and White City, 2-6, sixth.

Solomon girls have the first seed with a record of 5-3. Wakefield, 3-4, is third; Hope, 3-5, fourth; White City, 1-7, fifth, and Elyria, 1-8, sixth.

Centre boys played Elyria Monday and won the game, 59-37. Centre girls defeated Elyria, 67-45, in Tuesday’s game.

Carlye Simons and Leann Pankratz led the team with 15 points each. Allison Shields had 12 points and Shelby Deines had 10.

Friday’s games include Centre girls vs. Wakefield, 6 p.m., old gym; Centre boys vs. Solomon, 7:30 p.m., new gym.

Saturday’s games include girls’ fifth-place, 1 p.m., old gym; girls’ third-place, 1 p.m., new gym; boys’ fifth-place, 2:30 p.m., old gym; boys’ third-place, 2:30 p.m., new gym.

The girls’ championship game is at 4 p.m. and the boys’ championship game at 5: 30 p.m.
