After defeating Flint Hills Christian School, Manhattan, in a home game Jan. 27, the Centre High School Cougars were victorious Friday over White City, and lost to Wakefield Monday in a makeup game.

Playing on the road Friday, Centre defeated White City, 55-48.

The first quarter seemed to indicate the game was going to be a blowout, as Centre took a 15-2 lead.

However, the Huskies came back to outscore the Cougars, 19-13, in the second quarter to cut the lead to seven, 28-21.

Both teams scored 27 points in the second half and, thanks to that big first-quarter lead, the Cougars went home with a victory.

Centre shot 13-of-43 from the field, 6-of-23 from three-point range, and 11-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Three Cougars finished in double figures. James Weber was leading scorer with 17 points including five field goals and 7-of-8 free throws. He also had 10 rebounds.

Ben Krause was hot from the three-point range, making five for 15 points. Trevor Troutt scored 10 points.

At Wakefield, poor second-quarter shooting led to Centre’s 59-50 defeat Monday at the hands of the Bombers.

The Cougars trailed by four points, 16-12, after one quarter, but a 20-5 scoring deficit in the second quarter put them in the hole, 36-17, at halftime.

However, Centre came back with a vengeance in the second half, outscoring Wakefield, 33-23. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. Centre lost by nine points.

Harding had his best game of the season, scoring a team-high 14 points. Weber scored 11 points and had three blocked shots. Troutt scored 10 points and had 13 of Centre’s 39 rebounds. Hajek had six rebounds. Brunner provided three assists and had three steals.

Centre now has a record of 8-6.

The junior varsity handily defeated Wakefield, 62-31Mikael Antoszyk made 3-of-5 three-point shots and scored a total of 21 points.
