CENTRE BASKETBALL:   Boys

Staff writer

Sandwiched between two good quarters were two bad quarters for the Centre Cougars, which led to their disappointing defeat Friday at the hands of Solomon, 75-56.

Centre got off to an exciting start in the first quarter as good shooting by Trevor Troutt, James Weber, and Ben Krause gave the team a 19-11 lead.

With terrific rebounding led by Weber and Troutt, the Cougars maintained their lead in the second quarter, but the lead was reduced to one-point, 30-29, by halftime.

The Gorillas came out ready to play in the third quarter, piling up 27 points while Centre scored nine. The Cougars appeared to become demoralized, playing carelessly and turning the ball over numerous times. Solomon led, 56-39, at the end of the quarter.

Although the turnovers continued in the fourth quarter, Centre came back to produce decent results but not enough to overcome the large deficit.

Three-point shots by Nathan Barney, Brian Burhoop, and Krause, plus two field goals by Konley Harding provided a total of 17 points. Solomon had 19 points for a 19-point victory.

Centre was 14-of-36 in field goals, 7-of-18 in three-point shots, and 7-of-12 in free throws. The team compiled 39 rebounds but turned the ball over 24 times.

Troutt scored 18 points, Krause 12, and Weber 11. Troutt and Weber had 12 rebounds each.

In an exciting, overtime match-up, the junior varsity defeated Solomon, 54-50. Centre led, 36-26, after three quarters, but poor fourth-quarter shooting allowed Solomon to tie the game at 42-all.

Centre outscored Solomon, 12-8, in overtime, to win by four points. Rustyn Kerbs led Centre’s scoring, with 16 points, followed by Tyler Klenda, with 15.

In a game played Tuesday at Madison, the Centre varsity was defeated, 50-41. Troutt was the only Cougar to score in double figures, with 14 points.

Centre’s record as of Friday was 7-11. They played Wakefield Tuesday on the road and will play Chase County Friday. They will compete next week in a 1A regional tournament at Madison.
