Boys track seeks to return to state

Contributing writer

Several seniors on Goessel’s boys’ track team are expected to set the standard for the season as younger athletes begin to find their rhythm in different events. Heath Goertzen qualified for state in the triple jump last year and scored points during the season in the 3200 meter race. Ben Wiens is expected to medal in the 1600 and 800 meter races and also participated in the 4x800 relay at state last year. Brian Hiebert earned points in 2013 in the shot put and discus events. Mark Schmidt ran a leg in the 4X100 relay that picked up points in the Wheat State League meet. Zach Wiens, sophomore, held his own in the 100 meter hurdles and is expected to improve this season.

Goessel will host meets this year on April 15 with four other schools and then on May 15 for the Wheat State League meet.

The first meet of the season will be at Remington on April 8. Athletes will hope to peak in performance for the May 23 regional track meet in order to qualify for the state meet on May 30.
