Bradford hooked on fishing

Staff writer

Brook Bradford, 12, of Hillsboro loves to fish. He and his dad, Bill, go every weekend possible. If it were up to Brook, he would go fishing every day, all day.

“I like it because it’s fun,” he said. “I love the outdoors. I like to feel the wind and look at the water.

“My favorite thing is to get a small pack of worms and see what I can catch with them.”

Earlier in June, Bradford caught a 20-inch catfish, but he used minnows for bait instead of worms.

“My dad caught a five-foot blue cat a few weeks ago,” Bradford said. “I hope I can get one like that.”

Bradford said he especially liked fishing in the coves at Marion County Park and Lake, but just about any place with water, and fish would do.

“Once I caught about 100 perch and one bullhead at the Hillsboro pond,” he said. “I like to go there with my friends.”

Bradford said he enjoyed fishing year-round, but summer was the best.

“Walleye don’t like thunderstorms,” he said. “But a lot of times that is when the fish bite the best, before and after a storm.”
