Brooker family memorialized: Park board recommends place for plaque

Managing editor

An impressive plaque will find a place of prominence in Central Park, renaming it as Brooker Park.

Marion City Council was told Monday the city’s park committee made a recommendation the plaque be placed with another plaque in the center of the park, just west of the gazebo.

The city received $50,000 several years ago for the renovation of springs in the park. With the name change, the city will receive an additional $50,000 for park improvements and Marion City Library also will receive $50,000.

If the city had not changed the name of the park, the trust would have required the city return the first $50,000 with no more donations made from the Brooker family trust.

City administrator David Mayfield said the Brooker family will attend a council meeting in the near future to make a formal presentation.

Water rates

The council determined the cost to sell water to Marion County Improvement District #2 for county lake customers will be $3.12 per 1,000 gallons.

The council will allow a maximum of 1.4 million gallons of water to be purchased per month. The current contract restricts the district to purchase 750,000 gallons per month. Mayfield said the city’s water plant could produce more than 1 million gallons per day, so increasing the amount would not be a problem.

The price was $2.70 per 1,000 gallons.

A contract will be drawn and approved at a future meeting.

Other business

The council met in closed session for 15 minutes with attorney Dan Baldwin and Mayfield in attendance. There were no decisions.

Budgeted transfers were approved.

The next meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the city building.
