Playing before a full house Friday, the Centre High School Cougars defeated Wakefield for the second time in two weeks. They won the homecoming game, 63-39, improving their record to 8 wins and 8 losses.
Brian Burhoop had an excellent night, compiling 25 points on three 3-pointers, six field goals, and 4-of-4 free throws. He also led the team in rebounds with 11.
Burhoop scored the first 4 points of the game. Adam Matz and Rustyn Kerbs each made a 3-pointer, and Tanner Brunner, Kordell Harding, and Trevor Hageberg also made field goals, contributing to a 21-13 first-quarter lead.
The lead built from there with quarterly scores of 36-23, 46-29, and 63-39. The Bombers could not handle Centre’s defense and missed many shots, which caused them to fall farther and farther behind.
A 17-10 fourth quarter gave the Cougars a 24-point victory.
The Cougars shot 37 percent from the floor and made 13-of-24 free-throw attempts.
In addition to Burhoop’s 25 points, Brunner scored 11, Harding 8, Hageberg 6, Kerbs and Matz 5 each, and James Wyatt 3. Kerbs contributed 4 assists and 4 steals.
Junior varsity
Centre’s junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 59-35. Leading scorers were Wyatt, 13 points, and Kyle Methvin, 11. Justin Deines had 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Wyatt and Chad Mueller had 6 rebounds each, and Methvin had 5.
Other scorers were Mueller 7 points; Deines, Grant Srajer, and Kodey Johnson 6 each; Ty Simons 4; and Houston Svoboda, Karl Riffel, and Jerami Slayden 2 each.
Elyria
In a makeup game Monday at Elyria Christian, the boys varsity defeated the Eagles, 58-49.
The Cougars led, 27-25, at halftime but outscored Elyria 31-24 in the second half for a 9-point victory.
Three players scored in double figures: Brunner, 16; Burhoop, 14; and Kerbs, 11. Burhoop and Brunner were leading rebounders.
The junior varsity defeated Elyria, 49-26. Leading scorers were Simons, 17, and Svoboda, 10.
