Can a wall be removed from city auditorium?

Council approves architect inspection

Managing editor

Even though there were no definite plans revealed Monday evening, Marion City Council is ready to proceed with renovation plans for the city’s auditorium.

Marion High School graduate and current Kansas State University architect student Courtney Geis has drawn plans.

Marion Advancement Campaign Chairman Todd Heitschmidt told the council that he was not ready to reveal renovation plans to the public until an architect or engineer inspects the 70-year-old building. Plans call for an interior wall to be removed. But before the council and the public will review the plans, MAC members want the approval of a professional.

MAC will pay costs for a review by an architect/engineer, Heitschmidt said.

Mayor Mary Olson asked how renovations would be paid.

“MAC has raised funds for a community center that we’re looking to put into this project,” Heitschmidt said. “We’re looking at other grant possibilities to go with this. It is going to be a partnership.”

Heitschmidt said MAC doesn’t want to own the facility and wants the public and the council involved in the project.

The wall in question is on the south side of Marion Chamber of Commerce office.

The next council meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the city building.
