Two members of the Centre FFA chapter, Andy Carlson and Nellie Hill, received American FFA Degrees Oct. 24 at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.

Both graduated from Centre High School in 2008. They join at least seven other CHS graduates who have earned the top FFA honor since 1985.

To earn the award, Carlson and Hill each earned and productively invested $7,500 in existing agricultural enterprises. They also demonstrated leadership and community involvement.

Carlson is the son of Glenn and Sandy Carlson of Burdick. Hill is the daughter of Kevin and Teresa Hill of Marion.

Centre FFA attends national convention

Centre High School FFA spent several days in Indianapolis attending workshops and listening to keynote speakers at FFA National Convention.

Centre sent 14 students, including 10 freshmen, to the convention. Two former students, Nellie Hill and Andy Carlson, received the prestigious American FFA Degree. The degree is the highest recognition bestowed by FFA, adviser Laura Klenda said.

The group left Oct. 20 and arrived late in the day at Indianapolis. Students heard a speech by Mike Rowe of the television show “Dirty Jobs”. His speech was about the importance of perception, Klenda said.

Paralympic athlete Josh Sundquist gave another speech. He spoke about persevering regardless of obstacles.

Students attending the convention included seniors Alex Hajek and Heath Hill, junior Ripley Howard, sophomore Dani Spohn, and freshmen Beka Basore, Carrie Carlson, Dylan Svitak, Genesis Rudolph, Houston Svoboda, Jerami Slayden, Justin Deines, Mikayla Antoszyk, Skylar Sullivan, and Tom Oborny.
