Carrie Carlson of Lincolnville, a senior at Kansas State University, has received a $1,000 undergraduate research grant to support her research work.
Majoring in food science, she has been researching zein, a protein in corn, in a cereal chemistry lab since February. The grant will allow her to continue her work throughout the school year.
At the end of the project, Carlson will be required to give a large poster presentation or write a paper to be published in a peer review journal.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “I get to use much of what I learned in my science classes. It’s a challenge. I have to continually change experiments until I get the desired results.”
Duane and Karen Carlson are her parents.
