Carolyn Fred

Carolyn Virginia (Spencer) Fred, 96, of Fort Morgan, Colo., died Aug. 9, 2010 at her home.

She was born March 3, 1914, in Greenfield, Ark., to Robert L. and Cora Mason (Teague) Spencer. She graduated in 1935 from Missouri Baptist School of Nursing in St. Louis and worked as a registered nurse in St. Louis; Cedar Falls, Iowa; and in Elgin, DeKalb, and Sycamore, Ill.

Virginia married Bernhart G. Fred Jan. 9, 1943, in Raleigh, N.C. He preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded by her parents, a brother, and a sister.

She lived in DeKalb for 48 years, moving to Colorado in 2007 to live with her daughter.

Her survivors include three children, Susan Marshall of Peabody, Robert Fred of Richland Center, Wis., and Karen Mohr, of Fort Morgan; three sisters, Gertrude Clifford of Denver, Frances Gillis of Truman, Ark., and Bobbie Mooney of Clarksdale, Miss.; and five grandchildren.

There will be no services by request of the deceased. Private inurnment will take place at a future date at Jonesboro Memorial Park, Jonesboro, Ark.

The family has established a memorial in Virginia’s name with a DeKalb shelter, Hope Haven of DeKalb County, 1145 Rushmoore Dr, DeKalb IL 60115.
