Chad Carr, 26, was bound over Friday for trial in the March 27 death of 19-month-old Vincent Hill.

Hill was the son of Richard Hill and the grandson of Jim and Gail Myers, all of Peabody.

A Harvey County sheriff’s deputy, a pediatrician on call at Newton Medical Center, a Harvey County investigator, and a Sedgwick County deputy coroner, presented graphic testimony about the child’s injuries and efforts to revive him.

Several witnesses testified about statements made by Carr during interviews after his arrest March 27.

Carr had been living with the child’s mother Katheryn Nycole Dale for about four months. Dale and a 6-week-old female left the North Newton apartment at 9 a.m. March 27 to attend a baby shower in Wichita. Dale left her son in Carr’s care for the day.

Carr had told authorities he was asleep when she left and when he awoke at about 3 p.m., he found the boy in his crib, unresponsive and not breathing. He called 911 for help.

The child was pronounced dead by pediatrician, Dr. Audrey Roberts, at Newton Medical Center emergency room, seven minutes after he arrived at the hospital. Carr was arrested later that evening.

District Judge Richard Walker reduced the original complaint against Carr from five counts to three: first-degree murder, aggravated child endangerment, and child abuse.

A second count of aggravated child endangerment duplicated the first, Walker ruled, and there was not enough evidence to support a complaint of child abuse two days before the child died.

Carr pled not guilty to all charges. A jury trial was ordered.

He is scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing and a preliminary hearing on unrelated child pornography charges at 1 p.m. August 18.
