Marion High School wrestler Brody Carroll placed fifth Saturday in the 130-pound class at the 3A state tournament in Hays.
The sophomore grappler defeated Jacob Schroeder of Silver Lake, 6-0, in the fifth-place match.
Carroll also bested Gabby Speer of Doniphan West in his first-round match by pin and Michael Dusin of Phillipsburg, 4-0, in his first match in the consolation bracket.
Carroll’s only two losses came at the hands of Gage Younger of Ellis, 6-3, in the second round and Riley Soward of Halstead in a consolation semifinal. Younger only had six losses on the year before losing in the semifinal; Soward had only lost once before losing to 130-pound champion Troy Bainter of Norton in the semifinal. The two wrestlers met in the third-place match with Soward besting Younger, 7-4.
Carroll ended the year with a record of 39-6. Carroll qualified for the state tournament both years he has competed with the Warriors.
Marion’s other participant, senior Randy Regnier, did not fare as well in the 125-pound class. Regnier lost in the first round to Cole Werner of Pike Valley, 3-1. He was subsequently defeated in the first round of the consolation bracket by John Rodruguez of Caney, 8-2.
Regnier’s end of the year record was 35-5.
