Staff writer

A first-round 59-51 loss Jan. 15 to Peabody-Burns in the Cougar Classic tournament last week put the Centre boys in the losers’ bracket. They defeated Wakefield Friday, 53-35, and Hope Saturday, 45-31, to finish in fifth place.

The outcome of Saturday’s game never was in doubt although Hope got within five points several times.

Two treys by Justin Deines and one by Grant Srajer plus field goals by Kyle Methvin and Ty Simons helped the Cougars to an 18-7 lead after one quarter.

Simons and Kodey Johnson each made a trey in the second quarter and Methvin added a layup. Centre was outscored 10-6 but had a seven-point lead at halftime.

Methvin had a good third quarter, scoring two points from the field and four free throws. Cory Brunzell made a trey and Deines added five points. Hope was held to eight points as Centre increased its lead to 38-25.

A low-scoring 7-6 fourth quarter resulted in a 14-point victory for the Cougars.

Deines was Centre’s leading scorer with 19 points. Other scorers were Methvin, eight; Simons, seven; Srajer, five; Brunzell, four; and James Wyatt, two.
