Centre boys lose a heartbreaker

The Centre boys’ basketball team fought a close contest Friday with White City, losing at home in overtime, 60-56.

The Cougars maintained a slight lead in the first half. Justin Deines scored three treys, a 2-pointer, and two free throws. Cory Brunzell made two treys, Kyle Methvin made three field goals and one free throw, and Dakota Stimpson added two points. Centre led, 28-24, at halftime.

White City came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 20 unanswered points. Simons scored seven points for the Cougars, and Deines added three, but White City led, 44-38.

The Cougars scrambled to catch up in the fourth quarter. Free throws by Simons, Deines, and Brunzell helped them tie the game with 3 minutes, 30 seconds remaining.

The Cougars led 51-50, when they lost a rebound out of bounds. White City made a free throw in their next possession to send the game into overtime.

White City scored the first five points in extra time. A trey by Deines and free throw by Simons closed the gap to one. White City led 58-56 with seconds to go when Deines attempted a layup that rolled off the rim. White City got the rebound and scored two free throws to win the game by four points.

Leading scorers for Centre were Deines, 23; Simons, 13; and Brunzell and Methvin, 9 each. Deines had 13 rebounds and 2 steals. Simons had 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
