Centre defeats Cedar Vale/Dexter, 50-16

In a non-district game Friday on the road, the Centre Cougars defeated Cedar Vale/Dexter 50-16.

Dakota Stimpson had a good night with five touchdowns, two extra points, 23 carries for 99 yards, one reception for 49 yards, and one interception for 20 yards.

Conner Montgomery scored the only touchdown in the first quarter with a 40-yard run. Nick Salamone caught a pass from quarterback Kyle Methvin for the conversion.

Methvin ran three yards for another Centre touchdown one minute into the second quarter. Salamone caught a pass from Stimpson for the extra points. Centre led, 16-0.

Cedar Vale scored its first touchdown at 6:19 on a 21-yard pass reception and was successful in the conversion attempt, closing the gap to 8 points.

However, a minute later, Stimpson caught a 49-yard pass from Methvin to add another 6 points. The first half ended with the score 22-8.

Stimpson scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and added two extra points before Cedar Vale scored its final touchdown on a 41-yard pass and successfully converted.

The Cougars added two more touchdowns in the final quarter, both on runs by Stimpson. Salamone ran for the conversion on Centre’s final possession.

Centre outrushed its opponent, 246 to 49 yards but was beaten in the air, 181 to 54.

Centre incurred five penalties for a loss of 50 yards. However, Cedar Vale had eight penalties for a loss of 60 yards.

Methvin had 16 carries for 89 yards, and Montgomery had seven carries for 58 yards. Methvin threw two completed passes for 54 yards. He threw one intercepted pass.

The Cougars are 2-1 so far in district play. They will play their fourth district game Friday at Hartford.

Junior high

The junior high Cougars were defeated Thursday by Rural Vista, 27-14.

Josh Mercer scored both of Centre’s touchdowns on runs of 29 and 35 yards. Zach Barney threw completed passes to C.J. Thompson and Max Svoboda for four extra points.

The final game of the season will be Thursday at home against Peabody-Burns.
