The first game of the season Friday was a challenge for the young 1A Centre High School girls basketball team as they faced 3A Southeast of Saline on the road.
Boosted by two 3-point shots, the Trojans led the Cougars 21-8 after one quarter and went on to take a halftime lead of 35-14. The second half was a repeat of the first, resulting in a 26-point loss for Centre.
Allison Shields, the only senior on the team, led scoring with 9 points. Freshman Cacey
Simons scored 8 points, all of them in the first half. Bryanna Svoboda had 7 points including two 3-point shots.
Sophomores Anna Weber and Ellie Miller each scored 2 points.
The junior varsity was defeated, 54-30. Every player on the team contributed points. Genesis Rudolph led with 10 points. Amy Makovec scored 7 points, Carrie Carlson 5, Beka Basore 4, Katie Remy 2, and Cassandra Dones 1.
The teams will play Northern Heights Thursday and Herington Friday in the preseason tournament at Herington. The varsity will play at 6:45 p.m. each night. The junior varsity will play at 8:15 p.m.
