CENTRE:   Centre girls defeat Chase County

Staff writer

Seniors Allison Shields and Katie Remy received special recognition Friday during parents’ night at Centre High School. Shields is a basketball player and Remy is a cheerleader.

In the game that followed, the girls varsity defeated Chase County, 39-34.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated the first 6 minutes of the game. Starting with a 3-pointer, they piled on 7 more consecutive points to lead 10-0.

Shields led the Lady Cougars on a surprisingly swift turnaround, scoring three consecutive field goals and a free throw. Cacey Simons followed with another field goal, and the quarter ended with Centre trailing by 1 point, 10-9.

Shields made a free throw at the beginning of the second quarter to tie the game at 10-10. The Lady Bulldogs surged ahead by 6 points before the Lady Cougars added 5 of their own. Centre trailed by 1 point, 16-15, heading into halftime.

Centre got its first lead of the game on two free throws by Anna Weber with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Cougars ended the quarter with a 6-point lead, 28-22.

The game was tied again in the fourth quarter but scoring by Shields, Ellie Miller, and Amy Makovec resulted in a 5-point win for the Lady Cougars.

“Allison Shields, playing in her last regular season game at home, had a terrific night,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “She scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from both the field and the free-throw line, matching her career high. She added 12 rebounds to make this her sixth double-double of the season. She also picked up 7 steals to lead the defensive stand.”

Stahlecker said it was a good victory, as the team came back from an early deficit, took control in the third quarter, and then withstood their opponent’s charge in the fourth quarter.

Weber had 10 points, Simons 4, and Miller 2.

Little River

In a makeup game Thursday, the girls varsity was overwhelmed by the speed and quickness of the Lady Redskins of Little River and was defeated, 47-26.

Little River jumped to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Redskins’ strong defense reined in Centre’s scoring and garnered numerous turnovers, and their strong offense allowed them to build their lead as the game progressed.

None of the Lady Cougars scored in double figures. Shields and Simons scored 6 points each, Weber, Beka Basore, and Miller 4 points each, and Makovec 2.

Solomon

In a makeup game Monday at Solomon, Centre was defeated, 44-35.

The team trailed for three quarters but got within 1 point, 34-33, before losing by 9.

Simons scored 8 of Centre’s 9 points in the first quarter. They trailed, 26-19 at halftime.

A comeback began in the final two minutes of the third quarter on a field goal by Shields and two consecutive field goals by Makovec. Centre trailed, 32-27.

Weber made two free throws and a field goal in the fourth quarter, and Shields added a basket to bring Centre within 1 point, 34-33. However, the team couldn’t do much after that, and they suffered a 9-point loss.

They ended the regular season with a record of 10-10 and will be playing Monday in the first round of substate. The location was not finalized at press time.

The junior varsity defeated Solomon, 29-26, in two quarters.
