Centre girls defeat Goessel in overtime

It was a good homecoming Friday at Centre High School as both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won their games.
The girls’ team defeated Goessel 67-58, but it took an overtime to do it.
Makenzie Deines and Shelby Makovec combined for 9 points in the first quarter. Amy Makovec added two free throws, and Centre led, 11-8.
Amy Makovec blocked a shot and stole two balls for layups in the second quarter. Goessel came back from a 14-8 deficit to tie the game at 20 with 1 minute and 30 seconds remaining in the half. Baskets by Amy Makovec and Cacey Simons plus two free throws by Shelby Makovec resulted in a 26-20 Centre lead at halftime.
Goessel led most of the third quarter after scoring 8 unanswered points. The Bluebirds led, 35-34, at the end of the quarter.
The lead exchanged sides several times during the fourth quarter. Goessel led, 53-50, with 39.7 seconds remaining, but Bryanna Svoboda tied the game with a 3-point shot to send it into overtime.
The Lady Cougars displayed a new burst of energy in the overtime period. Svoboda, Shelby Makovec, and Deines combined for 14 points compared to 5 by Goessel, for a 9-point victory.
Shelby Makovec led Centre’s scoring, with 27 points, including 7 of 12 from the free throw line. Deines had 15 points and Amy Makovec had 14. Svoboda had 7 points and Simons had 4.
The junior varsity was defeated, 50-39. Shelby Pankratz led scoring with 17 points.
Centre defeated Elyria Christian 55-54 on Tuesday.
