Staff writer

Centre exchange student Lotti Benning controlled the boards Friday in a no-contest game at Peabody-Burns. She had 16 rebounds.

Coach Alan Stahlecker was pleased with the team’s overall defensive effort. They out-rebounded Peabody, 44-23, with 9 rebounds by Brenna Shields and 7 by Summer Espinoza. Shelby Makovec had 4 assists, Shields had 3, and each had 4 steals.

The Lady Cougars got an easy 58-14 victory with leads of 15-3, 22-5, and 44-11 in the first three quarters.

Makovec led scoring with 21 points, and seven others added points. They were Benning and Shelby Pankratz, 8 each; Callie Riffel, 6; Ally Basore, Brenna Shields, and Summer Espinoza, 4 each; and Nellie Kassebaum, 3.

Tuesday, Centre faced a tough Goessel Bluebirds team and came up short, 43-32.

Centre took a 24-21 lead into halftime, thanks to a 15-point second quarter with contributions from Makovec, Pankratz, Shields, and Benning.

After halftime, however, the tide turned against the Lady Cougars. Centre managed just 4 points in both the third and fourth quarters, for a second-half total of 8 points.

Goessel was able to take advantage with 22 second-half points, including 12 from the free-throw line.
