CENTRE:   Centre girls ends season in first round of regional

Elyria proves too much for the Lady Cougars

They didn’t lose by much, but the Centre High School girls basketball team went down in the first round of the regional tournament. Playing at fourth-seeded Elyria Feb. 23, the fifth-seeded Lady Cougars were defeated, 40-36.

The loss was their third to Elyria this season.

They dug a 9-0 hole for themselves in the first quarter and were not able to recover despite competitive showings in the other three quarters.

With two 3-point shots by Shelby Deines, two free throws by Carlye Simons, and a field goal and two free throws by Allison Shields, the Lady Cougars outscored Elyria 12-8 in the second quarter to trail by 5 points at halftime.

Neither team did much scoring in the third quarter, as Elyria outscored Centre 6-5 for a 6-point lead.

The Lady Cougars continued to battle back in the fourth quarter. They outscored Elyria 19-17 on points from Deines, Ellie Miller, Shields, Simons, and DJ Turner, but finished 4 points in the hole.

Simons scored 12 total points, followed by Deines, 11, and Shields, 9. Miller and Turner scored 2 points each.

The Lady Cougars ended the season with a record of 9-12.
