In a home game Friday, the Centre High School girls’ basketball team defeated Bennington, 45-35.
Centre led all entire game except for one instance late in the third quarter when Bennington took a 19-18 lead.
Cacey Simons and Shelby Makovec made field goals to give Centre an early 4-3 lead. A 3-point shot by Simons at the end of the quarter helped Centre to maintain a 2-point lead.
The game remained close in the second quarter with very little scoring on either side. Makenzie Deines made a basket and Beka Basore scored a free throw to give the Cougars a 15-12 lead at halftime.
After the Bulldogs got the lead in the third quarter. Simons, Makovec, and Deines combined for 6 consecutive points, making the score 24-19 after three quarters.
The girls increased their lead to 13 points in the fourth quarter. A last-second 3-pointer by Bennington resulted in a 10-point victory for the Cougars.
Makovec led CHS scoring with 17 points including 9-of-13 on free throw attempts, followed by Deines, 14, and Simons, 10.
Elyria
A home game with Elyria Christian Dec. 11 at home resulted in a 51-47 victory for the Cougars.
The game remained close all the way with Centre leading 8-6, 20-19, and 31-30 respectively for the first three quarters. Centre outscored Elyria 20-17 in the fourth quarter for the 4-point victory.
Shelby Makovec was the leading scorer with 20 points including three 3-pointers, one 2-pointer, and 9-of-12 on free throws. Simons scored 18 points including two 3-pointers, four 2-pointers, and 4-of-6 free throws.
The junior varsity was defeated, 47-14. Scorers were Taylor Peterson, Brenna Shields, and Kristin Vinduska, 4 points each, and Abigail Svoboda, 2.
CJHS
The Centre Junior High School girls’ basketball team defeated Elyria Christian Thursday at home, 30-7. Shelby Pankratz led CJHS scoring with 10 points.
